Random. A word used to describe me often throughout my life. I have come to embrace this word as it defines my ability to find joy in the unknown. I remember a blind contour line drawing exercise in high school where I first encountered random. Amazing random lines were put down by chance and I have been fascinated by a random line ever since.
My drawing has worked to expand this concept. By creating layers and layers of random lines, smudging to create overlapping fields, thick and thin lines create depth, shadow and form.
Moving random into my painting takes on an entirely new feel. When I put down a line or brush stroke, it is never straight; I twist the implement in my hand as I work angular arching lines. These beautiful or awkward lines emerge, and I constantly am surprised by each one. It is this randomness that keeps bringing me back. What will emerge the next time? It’s as if the lines have always existed and I have just helped them to be seen.
My work in humanitarian assistance and development continues and still influences an aspect of my work. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of that work goes to support the impact of emBOLDen Alliances, a registered 501c3 nonprofit organization that I Co-Founded.
